Street food snack – Bangkok’s best Thai donuts

Bangkok’s most famous husband-and-wife Thai-donut-duo is to be found in the Sao Ching Cha area, close to the City Hall. They have been featured in many TV-shows and magazines. A fact difficult to escape when looking at the walls of this small shop.

Thai donuts (Pa Tong Ko) is a street food snack most Thai’s take seriously, and you will not be disappointed at Pa Tong Ko Sawoy. A unique sauce sold with the donuts, a greenish custard made from pandan, is a delicious adding. It has an earthy, sweet and rich aroma and flavor. The pandan custard is a common dipping sauce for fresh breads of all sorts, and also with waffles. Sweetened condensed milk is  popular alternative.

Thai donuts are definitively not low on calories. It’s a fried dessert so that speaks for itself, but sometimes a sweat treat is exactly what you need.

These pairs of connected dough sticks is in Thailand said to represent a couple who are deeply attached to one another, a slightly better option then what follows from Chinese folk etymology, which is two evil people who deserves to suffer in hot oil.

The donuts at Pa Tong Ko Sawoy are pure street food delights and a fine conclusion of a meal you have started somewhere else in this neighborhood with so many really good eating options. The Sao Ching Cha area is a real contender to the position of being the best street food and hole in the wall area in all of Bangkok. Dinso Road is a 3 minutes walk away, a street with plenty of eating options. You can have some lovely duck at Tien Song Ped Yang, a great bowl of Tom Yam Kung at Mitr Ko Yuan, or some delicious crab at Krua Apsorn. And there are plenty of other options as well. Mahannop Road is just 30 seconds away from Pa Tong Ko Sawoy, and also filled with excellent eating alternatives. Niyom Potchana serves for example delicious red pork.

Sawoy means by the way “eat” in  the Thai royal dialect. And the blue and green sticker on the front of the store is an award from Perp Pitsadan. It’s maybe not as prestigious as the Shell Shuan Shim award, but it’s an award most Thai’s pay much attention to.
