Khao Mok Gai or Chicken Biryani at Convent road

One of the best chicken biryani (khao mok gai) in Bangkok is served from a street stall along Convent road in the Silom area. It’s the central business district of Bangkok, meaning masses of people. Translated into Thai language that means lots of food, especially at lunch hours on weekdays when hordes of hungry office workers head to fill up their stomachs.

This stall has gotten a well deserved reputation for their biryani – yellow curry rice with chicken, a dish they have been serving for 30 years. Translated into quality, thats a long time to practice in order to define your tastes and texture. Khao means rice, Mok means bury and Gai means chicken. In other words, chicken buried in rice. It’s flavored with a bunch of spices well known in Muslim food, like turmeric, ground coriander, ground cumin, cardamom etc.

3E6B8665It’s a halal dish, and their khao mok gai consists of a chicken drumstick, some slices of cucumber and fried chopped onions. The rice is aromatic and well-seasoned, not to forget that the chicken is tender. The accompanying sauce is sour and not sweet, and is a good complement to the dish. together with the fried shallots.

They also serve a bowl of delicious chicken soup filled with lip licking bones. It’s a rather perfect mach along with the biryani. It’s a mild soup with an elegant flavor to it. It can almost be considered a crime not to order the soup along with your khao mom gai!

3E6B8795Hidden among the many trolley’s along the Convent Road, this khao mok gai stall draw crowds of office workers and locals at prime time lunch, so it’s advisable to arrive a bit after the regular lunch time (12am-1:30pm) to avoid the cuing. The regular opening hours are 11am to 5pm, but be aware that you should not be to late to avoid the discovery of the stall being vanished as they have sold out.

How to get there: Take BTS to Sala Daeng and Exit #2. Continue until you turn left at Convent road, then continue for like 50-60 meters and you see Khao Mok Gai Convent Road on your left side, a street stall just outside the Bua restaurant. Look for the big pan with yellow rice.
